Dressing for Your Office Holiday Party

Dressing for Your Office Holiday Party: Featuring a midi-length wine velvet pephem dress and gold chrome pumps

So I love going to my office’s holiday party. It’s pretty much all of my favorite things–dressing up, free food, free drinks, and dancing! However, dressing for the office holiday party isn’t always easy. My first year, I spent weeks scouring the internet and local stores for the perfect dress. I didn’t want to be overdressed and stand out in a bad way, but being under-dressed is right up there with spiders and two-headed animal crackers on my List of Things I Hate. I felt like my only option was to get it right the first time. read more

With a Cherry on Top: Wearing Fall’s Hottest Color

With a Cherry on Top: Featuring a cherry red v-neck sweater, a plaid pencil mini skirt and over the knee boots

In case you’ve been underground the last few months, the color dominating fall is cherry red. If you read my previous post on fall trends according to your zodiac sign, you know that this color was all over the Fall/Winter ’17 runways, and I’m loving it. Red isn’t an uncommon color for fall and winter, but it usually comes in the more subdued shade of wine. As fashion has gotten louder as a whole, it’s no surprise we’ve turned up the volume on red as well. read more

The Jamaica Lookbook: My Guide to Looking Like I’ve Done this Before

The Jamaica Lookbook: My Guide to Looking Like I've Done this Before

So before November 1st, I had never been out of the country before. Since graduating college, I’ve been tackling a lot of “firsts” in my life, and this year one of my goals was to travel internationally for the first time. Going to Jamaica started out as an innocent suggestion from my boyfriend, but once the idea was there, it locked in. I’d officially been biten by the travel bug. read more

MisManaging My Stress in the New Fall Season

(Mis)Managing My Stress in the New Fall Season: Featuring a psychedelic slip dress and patent black ankle boots

Although you’d barely notice by going outside, the seasons have officially changed. September 21st was the first day of fall, and it was also about 85°F here. The change was subtle. For me, a seasonal allergy sufferer, I slowly began waking up with a stuffy nose and sneezing fits. Though the sun stayed strong, the humidity in the city dropped. I even started getting sick of my summer clothes. The shift was occurring even while it looked like everything was staying the same. read more

Happy Birthday! 3 Things I Learned from Starting a Style Blog

Happy Birthday! 3 Things I Learned from Starting a Style Blog

A year ago, I decided to start a style blog. It started out as a fleeting idea–I had taken a picture of my outfit for a happy hour, and I felt bad uploading yet another outfit picture to my instagram. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could share this only with the people who were interested in seeing my outfits?” read more

How I Spiced Up Business Casual

A professional wardrobe is where style goes to die.

Okay, not really, but that was definitely how I felt leaving school. I’ve always been into street style, and I spent most of college in giant gold hoops and jeans. Nothing about my style felt transferable to a business wardrobe, and as someone’s whose style is very near and dear to their heart, giving it up felt terrifying. I wasn’t meant for black pantsuits with a sensible heel. The Man was trying to smother my individuality! Wake up people! read more

My birthday was this past weekend and Style of a Gemini‘s birthday is coming soon too! I like celebrating my birthday–it’s a chance to reflect and to shamelessly indulge. Intro to Prints: Inspired by Union Market DC

Intro to Prints: Featuring a midi length a-line skirt with a busy primary color print, a black cropped t-shirt and buckled strappy black stilettos

It’s official: the muted monochromatic look is dead. It’s not surprising considering the biggest Spring/Summer ’17 runway trends all showcased bolder and brighter looks. The days are getting longer, warmer, and full of a lot more fun. Suddenly, all those neutrals in your closet are looking kind of depressing. With Memorial Day weekend officially kicking off barbecue season, it’s the perfect time to dive into brighter and busier palettes! To that end, prints are your new best friend. read more

Wearing Your Heritage on Your Sleeve

Heritage: Featuring an orange and gold headwrap, a nude bodycon scoop dress and chunky necklace

I’m a first-generation American. My family immigrated from Zambia, and I was the only one born here. Being first-gen gives you an interesting perspective on culture as you try to navigate both spheres. There were plenty of things I loved about it, such as the wealth of inside jokes I’ve got with nearly every West African I meet from growing up around a lot of Nigerians. However, I also struggled with reconciling my parents’ Zambian standards for me with the American ones I was growing up around. Both the joy and struggle of being first-generation have shaped who I am. read more

Working through Artist’s Block

Working through Artist's Block: Featuring a peach bodysuit with a white embroidered sheer cover, lightwash jeans, and embroidered floral pumps with an ankle strap

Lately, I’ve been struggling a lot with artist’s block. Writer’s block, fashion block, finding-the-perfect-backdrop block, I’ve been struggling with all of it. I’ve been feeling fresh out of complete creative ideas. Everything’s just a fragment of an idea, a direction with no clear path to the end, and it’s been driving me crazy. All my fellow creatives, I’m sure you can understand how that frustration with the artist’s block only blocks you more, and then you’re just super-pissed and out of ideas. read more
