Working through Artist’s Block

Working through Artist’s Block

Working through Artist's Block: Featuring a peach bodysuit with a white embroidered sheer cover, lightwash jeans, and embroidered floral pumps with an ankle strap

Lately, I’ve been struggling a lot with artist’s block. Writer’s block, fashion block, finding-the-perfect-backdrop block, I’ve been struggling with all of it. I’ve been feeling fresh out of complete creative ideas. Everything’s just a fragment of an idea, a direction with no clear path to the end, and it’s been driving me crazy. All my fellow creatives, I’m sure you can understand how that frustration with the artist’s block only blocks you more, and then you’re just super-pissed and out of ideas.

My high school creative writing teacher taught me the importance of writing through writer’s block, as that’s really the only way through. “Just keep putting words onto the paper,” she said, even if you hate how it sounds and it doesn’t quite feel perfect. Have I told you I’m a perfectionist? Letting go of something before I feel it’s “perfect” has about the same appeal as getting a root canal. I know it’s for my own good, but I still hate everyone for making me do it and I’m gonna avoid it as long as I can.

But pushing through really does pay off. Some of my favorite posts have come out of ideas I’ve felt indifferent to! My Valentine’s Day post was one I felt totally indifferent to, and my sister encouraged me to just try the idea anyways. It’s now my most popular post on instagram, and I’m really proud of the final product!

With this shoot, I wanted to embody that carefree approach. Embrace everything that makes fashion fun, and enjoy it without worrying about making it perfect. I could give you a laundry list of “imperfections” from this day, but the reality is, things don’t have to be perfect to be great!
