The Jamaica Lookbook: My Guide to Looking Like I’ve Done this Before

The Jamaica Lookbook: My Guide to Looking Like I've Done this Before

So before November 1st, I had never been out of the country before. Since graduating college, I’ve been tackling a lot of “firsts” in my life, and this year one of my goals was to travel internationally for the first time. Going to Jamaica started out as an innocent suggestion from my boyfriend, but once the idea was there, it locked in. I’d officially been biten by the travel bug.

So I saved up some money, got my first passport featuring an awful photo in which you can see up my nose, and booked a week-long vacation. I was both excited and nervous. I’d never been on vacation for that long, let alone to a whole other country, and what was I going to wear? How was I going to pack both efficiently and fabulously?

Of course, the style of a Gemini always comes through, and I think I managed to look like I knew what I was doing. There were some missteps, such as the fact that everyone at my resort dressed way more casually than I normally do, but a Gemini is nothing if not adaptable! Here are some of my featured looks from the trip.

The Airplane Transitional Look

I had only flown twice before this trip, but that was enough for me to learn that airplanes are cold. Air conditioning continues to be my nemesis no matter what kind of vehicle I’m travelling on, but I didn’t want to show up in Jamaica in sweatpants and a hoodie. I needed a look that could easily transition from one climate to another.

In comes these adorable wide leg pants I found at H&M for literally 75% off! They were breezy enough to stay cool in the heat, but covered enough so I wouldn’t freeze on the plane. I paired it with this strappy high neck crop top and a jean jacket that was quickly abandoned once I landed. Stylish, comfortable, and adaptable.

The Long Day Dress Up Look

I woke up at about 3am to leave for Jamaica. Between all of the excitement of getting there to actually arriving, I was running on adrenaline. The resort was exciting, everything was paid for, and I wanted to take full advantage of my first day there. So when it started getting late (which for me at this point is like 9pm) and I could feel my body giving up, I needed a look for the bar that was both cute and low-maintenance. The kind of clothes that you could fall asleep in and not wake up a couple hours later with uncomfortable imprints in your body.

Enter a cute maxi skirt and a flouncy strapless top. Maxi skirts and dresses are the Fashion God’s gift to humans because their effortless style knows no bounds. I also managed to score the top for literally $1 because stores were practically giving away their summer stock by the end of October. Perfect for sipping rum punch!

The Outdoor Excursion Looks

I did two outdoor excursions while I was in Jamaica–a Jeep safari tour and a zipline adventure. One thing I learned from the safari tour was that the most important part of my outfit was bug spray. I forgot to bring some and ended up with 31 mosquito bites by the end of the tour! It was a special kind of itchy hell, but totally worth it.

My uniform for the outdoor trips was a sports bra and leggings. Perfect for catching all of the sweat and also doubled as a swimsuit when necessary! Bonus outfit accessories in this picture are my harness and helmet for ziplining, which was amazing! Nothing like trusting a wire cable to carry you 600ft above a Jamaican forest.

The Dinner Date Look

We made a reservation for the a la carte restaurant at our resort Friday night. It was outdoor and situated next to the beach with some gorgeous low lighting. Perfect night to get dressed up, right? Unfortunately, stiletto heels and wooden walkways don’t go well together and I put in more effort than I wanted dodging holes. Stiletto heels were a little too dressy and impractical for a beach resort. At least they still looked classy as hell!

The Beach Day Looks

A Jamaica lookbook wouldn’t be complete without some beach day looks! My two favorites of the week were this gold and daishiki print two piece and the olive green one piece below. I got so many compliments on the two piece, it was definitely the hit item of the trip! I loved it so much I even wore it a few times, which generally never happens.

This one piece is the first one piece I’ve owned since swim class freshman year of high school. One pieces were everywhere this summer, so I decided to try it for myself! I loved how it doubled as a cute bodysuit. The high cut leg was a little more risque than I usually do, but for a tropical vacation it was perfect.

Yeah mon!

I had a wonderful time in Jamaica and feel great having accomplished another first! While I’m still unwinding a bit from vacation, I’m excited to create some cold weather content now that fall has officially hit the District. Stay tuned for more posts coming soon and be sure to follow me on instagram for more looks and #styleinspo!

Lots of love,
