Best and Worst Trends of 2018: Style of a Gemini Reflects on This Year in Fashion

2018 is drawing to a close, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on our year in fashion. 2018 brought much bigger changes to the fashion landscape than we’ve seen in years, largely due to the death of minimalism in high fashion. Personally, I thought it was a change more than overdue–you can only see a nude-colored head-to-toe look so many times before it feels uninspired. The trends of 2018 definitely took fun and fantasy to another level.

While the trend towards maximalism started with last year’s runway shows—and if you still aren’t sure how to get into it, you can read my post on letting your zodiac sign decide for you—this year it really came into full swing. If you’re following me on instagram, you’ve already seen most of my favorites. For those of you who aren’t in the know, let’s review!

Best Trends of 2018

Animal Print

This was by far my favorite trend of 2018, and judging by the way it flooded every fashion blogger’s instagram feed this year, I’d say the decision was pretty unanimous. Talk about a backlash to the monochromatic look! Suddenly everyone was dripping in snake skin and leopard print, and I couldn’t get enough. It’s fun, bold, and surprisingly easy to incorporate into any closet. I’m betting this will hang around for a while.

How I wore it this year:

Embossed Crocodile Accessories

Don’t worry, animal lovers, it’s all fake! Croc skin showed up big on bags and shoes this year, and I was instantly sold. It was such a subtle detail that looked so luxurious. I saw it a lot with the Western trend of cowboy style boots, but since that’s not really my thing, I stuck with bags. This adorable crossbody from SheIn was an inexpensive way to experiment with the trend. Now that I’m in love and I’ve seen the staying power of it, I’m definitely getting more.

Cat-Eye Sunglasses

I wrote an entire post on my love for these, so it had to end up on my end of year list! The statement sunglasses are fun and add character to any look. I’ve honestly been surprised at how often I grabbed them this year, and I’m sure 2019 will be the same.

Worst Trends of 2018

Let me include the disclaimer that when I say “worst”, I mean my least favorite. I’m not trying to dump on anyone’s favorites, these are just the trends that you’re probably not catching me in any time soon. But hey, never say never, right?

Logomania

It’s not that I hate logos on clothing or bags. In fact, I think it can look great. And trust me, I understand that if you spent a lot of money on something, you want other people to know. Totally get it! But this year I saw way too many head-to-toe Fendi looks for it to be about style. Instead, it looks like a walking billboard. I’d like this so much more in moderation, but it’s what’s en vogue. Maybe for 2019, we can keep the logos to one item at a time?

Kitten heels

Now before you tell me, “Abigail, I thought you liked low heels!” I’d like to set the record straight that I do. I do like them, but only in block heel form. The mini stiletto kitten heel trend that’s taken over is not my thing, especially when worn in conjunction with straight leg cropped jeans. I find them uncomfortable and unflattering. Frankly, I don’t think this trend is going anywhere because I saw it all over the blogs this year. If you like it, you’re in luck! If you’re like me, you just have to deal.

Dad Shoes

Chile, dad shoes. It all started (well, not really, but humor me) when Balenciaga released these over-sized, over-priced, purposefully dusty looking sneakers. Hypebeast aesthetics had fallen into high fashion, and suddenly everyone from the Hadids to the Jenners are wearing them. Kanye, of course, also had the dad shoe in his Yeezy line. I’m just not at a point yet where I can look at them and see anything other than the New Balances people were made fun of for wearing when I was in middle school. Maybe my dislike of them is trauma-related, I don’t know. All I know is that they’re still going to be here in 2019, and I’m upset about it.
